White and broken rice milled in Kedah, sold by the bag or by the tonne to caterers, canteens and restaurants in the north.
This family rice mill outside Alor Setar buys padi from growers in the surrounding irrigation scheme and mills, grades and packs it on site. Alongside standard white rice in 5, 10 and 50 kg bags, it sells broken rice for nasi lemak and porridge stalls, and repacks imported glutinous rice for kuih makers.
Buyers are caterers, school canteens, mamak restaurants and wholesalers in Kedah, Perlis and Penang. Lorry deliveries go out from the mill for orders of half a tonne or more; smaller buyers collect from the mill shop. Bulk prices are reviewed after each harvest season.
