The workshop smells of cutting oil and kopi. On a weekday morning a dozen fabricators are bent over sheets of SUS304, and most of what they make will end up in a kitchen that measures less than 10 square metres.

"Hawkers know exactly where their hands go," says the founder. "If the wok burner is 3 cm too far, they feel it for 12 hours a day."

Built around the cook

Every job starts with a site visit and a conversation about how the cook moves. Drawings are revised until the owner signs off, then the steel is cut.

Why not buy off the shelf?

Off-the-shelf tables are cheaper, but shoplots in older parts of Penang rarely have straight walls. Made-to-measure counters waste less space and are easier to clean.
